4 of the Best Instagram Destinations in Pembrokeshire
Did you know that Wales is one of the most Instagrammable places on the planet? And Warpool Court Hotel is on the official list! Our gorgeously green countryside, soaring hills and long, golden beaches mean every holiday photo you take is guaranteed to have an amazing backdrop. So, if you’re planning on posting a few snaps during this year’s summer vacation in West Wales, here are some of the best Instagram destinations in Pembrokeshire.
Towering above the town of St Davids and the sandy swathe of Whitesands Beach is Carn Llidi. A walk up this craggy headland hill might give your legs a bit of a workout, but the views are definitely worth it. From the summit, you can see Ramsey Island just offshore and take in the dramatic Pembrokeshire coastland that stretches north and south.
Turn inland and huge expanses of heather-coated moorland and rolling green fields fall away into the distance. If you look out across the bay on a very clear day, you can even see as far as Wicklow in Ireland. And don’t forget to keep your camera ready for a few snaps of Coetan Arthur, the 5000-year-old burial chamber, during your walk.
If you want a change from soaring cliffs and lush green hills, take a trip further south to Bosherston Lakes near Stackpole. The lilies are at their best during the summer months so it’s great time to photograph the dazzle of colour that covers the calm, smooth ponds.
Once you’ve explored the walkways that traverse the lakes, follow the trail towards the coast. Beyond the sand dunes you’ll find yourself on Broad Haven South Beach. As well as lovely golden sands, there are streams, springs and caves to discover here. Its most famous landmark is Church Rock, a jagged shard that juts dramatically out of the sea not far from the beach. Not a bad setting for some stunning holiday photos!
Carew Castle and Tidal Mill
If a more historic backdrop is what you’re after, make some time for a visit to Carew Castle and Tidal Mill. The impressive ruins of the 2000-year-old part Norman, part Tudor fortress rise dramatically from the low-lying landscape on the tidal reaches of the Carew River. Although now in ruins, the mix of architectural styles and interesting historical features make for some great images for any history-lover’s Instagram account.
The nearby restored tidal mill dates from the early 19th century. The views of the castle and tidal mill from the opposite bank of the river are stunning, especially on a day when the calm mill pond reflects the intense colours of a dramatic Pembrokeshire sky.
Remote and beautiful, Skomer Island is a breeding ground for thousands of sea birds and probably most famous for its puffins. Early summer is the best time to take a trip there if you want to take some shots of these tiny, brightly-coloured visitors before they fly back out to sea. As well as puffins, the island is also home to one of the largest Manx shearwater colonies in the world. From snapping puffins waddling in and out of their burrows to taking shots of thousands of birds soaring above the islands towering cliffs, it’s a wildlife photographer’s dream.
The boat journey to and from the island is also worth capturing. As well as being able to capture the dramatic coastal landscape from a different angle, you can often spot dolphins, seals, basking sharks and the odd sunfish if you keep your eyes open.
